Mario R. Dal Poz, MD, PhD, MSc, Coordinator for Human Resources for Health at the World Health Organization, addressed a packed room at UC Berkeley's International House on Thursday, October 16th for his Regency Lecture, entitled, "Global Response to the Health Workforce Crisis." Dr. Dal Poz candidly discussed projected critical shortages of doctors, nurses and midwives in many regions of the world, as well as the migration of health professionals from sub-Saharan Africa to more developed nations. He then outlined an agenda for action, in which WHO, a leading international health agency, and other partners are working to address the crisis and develop HRH improvements at the global, regional and country level. Discussants included School of Public Health Dean, Stephen Shortell; Director of the Global Center, Richard Scheffler; and UCSF Emeritus Professor, Thomas Hall.
